The Awukana Buddha statue is one of the finest examples of ancient Sri Lankan stone carving. Standing over 12 meters (40 feet) tall, this standing Buddha is carved out of a granite rock face and dates back to the 5th century during the reign of King Dhatusena. The statue is located near Kekirawa in North Central Sri Lanka. The craftsmanship is exquisite; the robe, clinging closely to the body, is carved with such precision that not a single fold seems out of place, highlighting the skill of the ancient sculptors. The statue stands in the 'Abhaya Mudra' pose, signifying fearlessness. Despite its massive size, the face bears a serene expression that commands reverence. The site is relatively quiet and peaceful compared to other major cultural sites, allowing for a contemplative visit. Awukana is a testament to the artistic and engineering prowess of ancient Sri Lanka and remains a powerful symbol of the island's Buddhist heritage.
