Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, covered by montane grassland and cloud forest. This plateau, at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, is eerily beautiful, often shrouded in mist that adds to its mystical atmosphere. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a hotspot for endemic biodiversity.
The park's most famous attraction is 'World's End,' a sheer cliff with a drop of about 870 meters (4,000 ft), offering spectacular views on clear days all the way to the southern coast. Another highlight is Baker's Falls, a stunning wide waterfall.
Wildlife here includes the Sambar deer, which are often seen grazing on the plains, and the elusive leopard. The park is also a birdwatcher's paradise, home to endemic species like the Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush. The circular trekking trail is popular and rewarding, taking visitors through diverse landscapes. Horton Plains offers a cool, refreshing, and scenic hiking experience unlike anywhere else on the island.
