Kirinda Beach

Kirinda Beach

Sri Lanka

A rugged, scenic beach known for its historical temple, massive rock formations, and wild waves.

Kirinda Beach, situated in the deep south near Tissamaharama, is a place of rugged beauty and legend. The beach is known for its wild waves, massive rocky outcrops, and sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. While the sea here is often too rough for swimming, the dramatic scenery creates a powerful atmosphere for walking and photography. Dominating the headland is the Kirinda Vihara temple, built on a giant rock. This site is steeped in history, dedicated to Queen Viharamahadevi, a heroine of ancient Sri Lankan history who is said to have landed here after being cast out to sea. The panoramic view from the temple rock is spectacular, encompassing the desolate coast, the dunes, and the distant Great Basses Reef lighthouse. Kirinda serves as a gateway to Yala National Park and the Great Basses wreck diving sites. It is a destination for those who appreciate raw, untamed nature and the deep roots of island folklore.
