Udawalawe National Park is widely regarded as one of the best places in Sri Lanka, and indeed the world, to see wild elephants. Located on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces, the park centers around the Udawalawe Reservoir. Its landscape is characterized by open grasslands and teak plantations, often drawing comparisons to the savannahs of East Africa.
With a population of several hundred elephants, sightings are almost guaranteed on any game drive. You can watch herds bathing in the water, feeding on scrub, and caring for their calves. Besides elephants, the park is home to water buffalo, monkeys, deer, and crocodiles. Leopards are present but rarely seen.
Udawalawe is also a prime destination for birdwatchers, with large flocks of water birds and raptors, including the Changeable Hawk-eagle. The nearby Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned calves are rehabilitated and released back into the wild, adds a commendable conservation aspect to a visit here. It is an essential stop for any wildlife enthusiast.
